THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM
(from Edgar Allan Poe) - 2m
THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM is based on the classic Nineteenth Century horror story by the inventor of the genre Edgar Allan Poe.
This play weaves the fiendishly attractive essentials of Poe’s original tale – the nightmare of a living grave, the nameless dread of a fathomless pit and the inevitability of the swinging pendulum with its razor-sharp blade – into a compelling narrative of love and depravity that builds to a terrific climax ... not forgetting a wicked sting in the tale!
Set in Cornwall in the 1820s, a time rich in smugglers and daring-do, hard-working farmer William Trevelyan makes a foolhardy attempt to rescue his young wife from the clutches of a wicked and lascivious Hellfire Club ... only to find himself at their mercy, held captive in a cavern beneath a house, dug out of the rock beside a raging sea.
