THE HAUNTED HOUSE
(from Charles Dickens) – 1f, 2m with doubling (or up to 3f, 7m without doubling) plus voice only 1 boy
In this comedy ghost play, based on the short story of the same name by Charles Dickens, central character young man Benjamin Standfast takes to the country to convalesce, but inadvertently rents a supposedly haunted house. He meets a variety of colourful characters along the way (which can all be played by two actors, adding to the comic effect, or by more actors without doubling), and there are a fair few shock jump moments to keep the audience on its toes.
As the play develops, however, Benjamin finds the haunting of “Poplar Grange” theraputic in quite an unexpected way.
“John Goodrum's meticulously-crafted adaptation”
(Eastern Daily Press)
“The Haunted House seemed set to raise more laughs than shivers among the large first-night audience – until just before the interval, when the spook factor suddenly rocketed” (Derbyshire Times)
