This adaptation of Dickens' historical tale, centred around the French Revolution, moves dramatically between Paris and London, as French aristocrat Charles Darnay falls foul of the violent revolutionaries, only to be saved from the guillotine at the last moment by the generosity of wastral look-alike Sydney Carton. Carton – also in love with Darnay's wife Lucie – sacrifices himself for her sake: “it’s a far, far better thing I do now, than I’ve ever done before.”
